MICHAEL T. COREY - PRESIDENT AND FOUNDER
Started his brokerage career in 1979 in Sale and Purchase and quickly became one of the industry's elite, successfully brokering the sale of ships ranging from Container vessels to ULCC'S. In 1985 he moved to the tanker chartering desk and within seven years was in a position to start Southport Maritime Inc., in September 1992.
PETER J. TORNABEN - FOUNDING PARTNER
A founding partner and senior broker with a degree in finance, his professional career started on Wall Street trading derivatives and related products from 1984-1990. Prior to starting Southport Maritime Inc., he financed Residual Fuel and Gas oil sales to the maritime community exposing him to most international oil companies and ship owners.
Joined Southport in January of 2007 as senior broker with primary focus on CPP. He brings with him over 30 years of experience in the shipping industry and specifically in tankers since 1981. The depth of his experience has been accumulated in a variety of positions he has held, including senior level management positions in such well respected companies as Odfjell, I.M. Skaugen, Trader Navigation and Clarksons. He is fluent in Scandinavian languages and English.
MATTHEW PETER COREY
Matt comes from a Ship Brokering family and is proud to be the 3rd generation in this industry. Graduating from the University of Central Florida in 2008, Matt interned with Minerva Marine for several months before joining the Southport team permanently. His primary focus is dirty petroleum products and crude moves worldwide.
Joined the company in 2000 as a Senior Broker. A graduate of New York State Maritime College and having worked with major oil companies he adds many years of experience and a further dimension to the team.
JONATHAN BLAKE COREY
JB is a 3rd generation ship broker working on the Clean Desk. He graduated from the University of Central Florida in 2011 with a degree in Political Science and International Relations. JB trained with ship owners, Panamax International and Navig8 as well as the energy brokers, Heat Energy prior to joining Southport.
CAPTAIN JUSTIN BACKUS
Justin is a Master Mariner who joined Southport in October 2012. He is a graduate of the United States Merchant Academy at Kings Point class of 2007. Prior to starting his career with Southport Justin was at sea, sailing on a variety of vessels including Tankers.
PAL JOHAN SKAAR
As the third generation in a Maritime family, Pal served two years in the Coast Guard. After an internship at Overseas Shipping Group (OSG), he joined Southport and is excited to continue in the Shipping Industry. He is fluent in English and Norwegian.
Prior to joining Southport, Matt spent six years with Chevron, chartering and operating both clean and dirty International and Jones Act tankers. He is a 2006 graduate of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point with a Bachelor of Science in Logistics & Intermodal Transportation. In addition, he has sailed as 3rd mate for American President Lines.
Jay is a 2010 graduate of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Before joining Southport in 2015, he worked for over 4 years offshore as a Second Mate/DPO on board drillship Titanium Explorer. He is also the co-founder of DP Training Solutions; a training center based in Long Island, NY that familiarizes students with every aspect of the navigational watch-standing duties required of an officer on board dynamically positioned vessels.
Clint joined Southport with well over a decade of experience, to spearhead the opening of our satellite office in Houston, Texas. After graduating from Texas A&M University with a Maritime Administration degree, he spent his early career at Lonestar R.S Platou and was eventually made Partner and Director. He most recently was part of the team that opened the ACM-Braemar USA office in Houston in 2013.
Michael joined Southport in 2017. He holds a degree in Economics from The University of Central Florida. Prior to joining Southport, he worked in finance at Robert W. Baird followed and Raymond James, as partner on a wealth management team.
